Diagnosing ADHD in Adults: What to Expect

The diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Adults first involves completing some screening questionnaires – for you about yourself as an adult now and ideally another by someone who knew you well as a child, such as a parent or family friend. During the assessment, we take a comprehensive developmental history. You are more than welcome to bring someone with you to the appointment if you wish, such as parent.  We also carry out clinical observations and take a detailed history, which includes mental health, drug and alcohol use and risk. We also explore other possible psychological conditions which may exhibit similar features to ADHD.

The assessment takes around two to two and half hours with a break if you wish. This at present is being arranged virtually as a first choice. At the end, an outcome and recommendations for management would be shared and discussed.

We use a gold standard assessment to diagnose the different subtypes of ADHD: predominately inattentive; predominately hyperactive/impulsive; predominately combined type.

After the assessment, you will receive a full report outlining any diagnosis and treatment plan details.

Diagnosing Autism in Adults:
What to Expect

The diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) in Adults first involves completing some screening questionnaires – for you about yourself as an adult now and ideally another by someone who knew you well as a child, such as a parent or family friend. During the assessment, we take a comprehensive developmental history. You are more than welcome to bring someone with you to the appointment if you wish, such as parent but please be aware there will be a period where it needs to be you and the assessors only.  We also carry out clinical observations and take a detailed history, which includes mental health, drug and alcohol use and risk. We also explore other possible psychological conditions which may exhibit similar features to ASC.

The assessment takes around three hours with a break. This at present is being arranged virtually as a first choice. At the end, an outcome and recommendations for management would be shared and discussed.

We use a gold standard assessment to diagnose Autism.

After the assessment, you will receive a full report outlining any diagnosis and treatment plan details.

Please note: this is a diagnosis service, not a prescription service. However, I can provide you with links to prescribers who do not require a reassessment.

What are the Benefits of Getting a  Diagnosis?

Many people have reported that after receiving a diagnosis of neurodiversity, they can feel a great sense of relief and are then better able to get the support and help that they need to move on with their future. After receiving a diagnosis, this can also help friends and family to have a greater understanding of why their loved ones might behave the way that they do.

ADHD and Autism commonly occur together as co-morbid developmental disorders. In such cases both conditions can interact with each other to produce a unique symptom profile. This is why choosing clinicians familiar with diagnosing neurodiversity is important. The diagnosis of neurodiversity can help to develop a better understanding of yourself and provide more ideas to help and support you.
